Hort’s Townhouse is a story of rediscovery. Set within a Grade II-listed building in the heart of Bristol, the space had drifted far from its origins, a once-glamorous 1920s cocktail bar reduced to a tired sports venue. However, beneath the surface, its character remained. Our role was to listen, understand, and bring that spirit back with clarity and conviction. This building has lived many lives — from warehouse to cinema to steakhouse — yet traces of its Jazz Age beginnings still lingered. Rather than impose something new, we allowed history to lead the design, using extensive research and restraint to guide every creative decision.
Design Rooted in Story

The Art Deco architecture defines the interiors: blue panelling, rectilinear mirrors, velvet banquettes, and chandeliers that catch the light with quiet confidence. The former layout was narrow and fragmented has been reworked to improve flow and connection. The cinema was removed and the kitchen expanded. In its place, layered spaces emerged that feel elegant, tactile, and deliberately composed.
Every element works together to create atmosphere without excess. It is expressive, but never theatrical. Characterful, yet composed.

A new era of the Roaring Twenties," guided the narrative and interior direction, fusing Art Deco elegance with Bristolian charm

Heritage quirks made distinctive through smart space planning, clever detailing, and rich, characterful styling.

Individual Boutique Bedrooms

The transformation extended beyond the ground floor. Upper levels were reimagined as 19 boutique bedrooms, each shaped by the constraints and quirks of the original structure. No two were the same. Some feature skylights tucked into unexpected corners. Others revealed quiet views across Bristol’s rooftops. Each room balances individuality with comfort, combining thoughtful technology, generous detailing, and moments of calm indulgence.

Master Bedrooms

Art Deco language now defines the interiors
On the upper floors, previously derelict offices were converted into 19 bespoke boutique bedrooms.
No two rooms are alike, and all reflect the charm and personality of the building’s eclectic past.
Each bedroom was shaped by its building constraints creating a warm, homely and welcoming spaces.

Despite having worked with Young’s & Co for 20 plus years, this was by far one of the biggest projects we have worked together on. We are immensely proud of what we have achieved. We feel we have showcased the rich history of the building itself and brought it back to its full potential. Each piece of furniture, design, and little details are selected to add to the character of the building and bring out the art deco feel it once captured so well.
